But then if it was carbies it could be carb icing (which my SE does when very cold and raining)

Simple way to solve that john, don't ride when it's very cold and raining.

My 07 model has done it in the past, I now start it and let it warm up till a couple of bars show on the temp gauge and it hasn't done it since.

Mine went crazy last week , I was fucking about trying different maps with tune ecu and all of a sudden during one of the test runs the throttle went to 6k and wouldnt come down. This was caused by the tps. I reset this to .59v and all was better, I also changed the battery as I had recently purchased one that was surplus to the requirements of an inmate here.(my bike is 2007 990) tps needs to be between .54 and .6v. My next move is to remove the sas (this weekend). Although the big rev is cured the original problem leaving the bike impossible to ride off road remains, that is at a constant throttle between 3500 and 4000 revs the bike just dies as if it is either being starved or flooded. I'm thinking I'm going to get her done on a dyno if I can't get her sorted shortly to my satisfaction.

Any suggestions who would be best to take it to ? I might come over a day early for the next off road w/e.

So I'm refreshing this topic. Yesterday it happened again... Similar story... Bike in the garage... start the engine (all is fine)... went outside (raining) and I have done couple of miles in the rain and revs become crazy... When I stopped the revs was around 3500-4000 (flying in that range)... So I turned an engine off an on again...and all is ok... so short ride (about a mile) and all problems back again... so turned off and on and again all is good, revs back to normal.... short ride and shit happens again.
I recon it is only happening during the wet days.
I'm really starting dislike this bike.

Sounds like a TPS issue. Maybe water getting into the TPS wiring on the ECU (under the headlamp)

I'm also suspecting a fuel pump. What do you think ? Because I see that very often I can't start the bike at the first time and I noticed a kind of leak around the left tank where the fuel pump is... Looks like maybe seals problem ?
I have also find some similar stories on advrider.com that if you have low fuel level...And That what is in my bike now - low fuel...I have to refuel it and monitor.
I have about 30000miles on the clock now.
