    Charlie's sidestand relocater

Just got round to fitting charlie264's stand relocator.

A few pics for those who are interested.

    Kit as supplied with instructions

    Stock mounting

Stock stand removed showing the mounting points on the engine cases

This is the flange on the early 950's that will obstruct the new mounting fitting, charlie and Black dog recommend grinding it back to allow the relocator to fit.

I'm not so keen on that idea as it supports the lower engine mount, so I elect to grind a bit out of the relocator plate, I reckon there is still plenty of meat left for it to work and it leaves the frame complete.

Here it is all bolted up

    And another

A few old bolts left over, I recommend you copaslip the new lower engine mount bolt before fitting as the original needed drifting out, and the you would'nt want the replacement rusting in over time.

And a pic of the beasty post fitting just to show it all works.

So the verdict, nicely made simple bit of kit, I new that it would need modding slightly to fit my early 950 so no surprises there, and no problem to do, time will tell if I've weakened it but I can't see it myself. There is a tiny bit of flex in it when you swing on the side stand, but that is purely down to separating the front mountings from the engine cases, and I would'nt expect that to be any kind of issue.

Is it worth doing, well if my cases never crack then obviously yes, but apart from that it's one thing I don't need to worry about now, so if you're concerned about yours, just do it.

Right I'm off to ride it and happily stand on the foot peg to get on without worrying about it any more.

    Nice write up Frog.

The debate between removing webbing or doing as you and others have done, by cutting a notch in the plate, personally I think removing some of the webbing from the 03-04s frame makes the frame more resemble the 05.5 onwards. I like the suggestion of a little copper ease on the bolt that goes through the case, I’ll be doing the same.

All said and done, I’d rather be putting a bent side stand or a bent side stand plate in my rucksack/tank bag, or straighten it with a rock on the roadside ... after an off, then sat in the middle of nowhere with oil pissing out of the engine case. It’s all a compromise, I don’t believe aluminium is man enough for the job; steel is on average is 3x stronger than aluminium whereas high carbon tensile is too ridged and will lessen a point of give in the event of a crash, i.e. better to bend the side stand assembly which I've done and its reasonably inexpensive to replace, rather than replacing or welding a cracked engine case.

    07 and 03 frame.

That's correct Samslow but what Frog's saying is that even if the sidestand relocator plate bends now it doesn't matter as it won't harm the engine case...

It would have made a better job if the slot had ended with a round hole - less chance of a crack starting there....... just like the square windows on the Comet airliner

Spacer is for SE as the bracket uses the mainstand mount.... Adv already has the spacer fitted cos the stand pivots on it.

I know what you are saying Kev, but I really dont think it's gonna be an issue, if I had any real concerns I can weld a bit of plate spaced over the top of the cut out, the back of the relocator presses against the engine case in use so it can't really go anywhere.

Exactly, the whole thing could get ripped off and I would'nt give a shit, cracking the engine cases is another thing altogether.
