I fancy an EXC 4 stroke - can u help

I am looking to buy a bike for hare and hounds and green lane riding. Have enjoyed riding 2 stroke mx bikes in the past but now (age 49) I fancy a 4 stroke. I like the idea of a 250 exc-f for the lightness and handling, but am a bit worried about rebuild costs. Against this a 400/450 may be a bit heavy/too much power. I am not a quick rider at all, just fancy getting out there and keeping young!

Has anyone got any thoughts that may help.

Buy a 450 then mate just remember to keep the right hand under control !

My mate did his first ever H & H on an old WR450 and reckond the chuggy motor is what helped him go the distance .

I race at a semi expert level and to be honest have found the newer shaped (08 onwards) 4 strokes to be lighter feeling and more flickable than my older shape (07 ) EXC 125 .

Try riding one first is the best option , with the new 2010 bikes commin out there will be a try out day some where near-ish too you , and they aint changed a hooge amount since then .
A bad days Racin is better than a good days work

it depends where your main focus is going to be.

    green laning - 450
    racing - 250exc-f

i race a 450 cos that is what i've got and i like it. however i know i should be getting a 250. i've ridden my mate's a few times and like it a lot. i hardly go green laning away more. racing gets into your blood!

250 can be ridden on the trails without problems but by all accounts it'll need a piston at 100 hours or so whereas the older rfs engines are good for 500 or more hours.
www.redbikejohn.com check it out for ride and race reports with the CHEC, Sidcup and South Reading clubs - most with Helmet Cam laps!! Free photos from most races attended. Enduroland practice days also reported on.

I think you've summed up the 400 / 450 perfectly and you've identified your next ride.

I had a 250-F, excellent bike but due to lack of use I sold it, I also never really got used to engine braking as I'd learnt to ride off road on a smoker.

If you're handy with spanners the 250-f is pretty much like lego, get the engine manual from KTM and it's like a Haynes manual that works (i.e. the pictures atually correspond to what your looking at.... we've all been there)

Excellent bike though, no need for anything bigger IMO (for racing)

ime 49 and just bought a exc 200 i love it and ive been rideing 4t for years now. the 2 stroke is more fun to ride and cheaper to maintain and so light. possibly be faster on a 4 stroke but its all about grins at our age.i have got a 250 sxf and 450 but i prefer to ride the 200 at the moment

A 400 is the bike for you, without doubt the best 4 stroke made by KTM, either the RFS, or the new EXC-R would suit depending on the depth of your pocket

I am in the same boat as you!!!!

I too am looking for a MINT 250EXC f, or a 400 EXC f. But i think there was a 2 year spell when the 400 wasnt made, so they are very rare!!

Good luck with your hunt for a decent bike.

So if you have a Mint 400, let me know. Sorry Brompton, yours is out my range.

    Regards

    Peter
