Circlip on forks - what's it for?

2006 SX 125 upside down WP forks
What does the split ring on the fork above the dust seal do please?
Keeps falling off and need to ride this weekend - can I go without, araldite it on, duck tape, etc.
I can't see what useful purpose it serves but sure someone will tell me otherwise, or not hopefully!
    Thanks

its only there to stop the fork guard from rubbing away at the fork leg, the better solution if fit the later 2008 fork guard proctectors which are a plastic clip and push tight onto the fork leg. You can ride without it but the circlip may rub away at the fork leg.

I had a slight rub on the fork, so I just put spacers behind the fork shields worked a treat although I have seen bikes with the clip nearly rubbed right through makes a mess of you forks too

Just pul/Twist the clip off, then use a cable tie as a temporary measure
