EXC 400 2010 burning oil after 18 hours

Hi all I'm new on here and need some help, I bought an EXC 400 new last year, just for a bit of green lane riding, and with a veiw to some alpine trail riding for holidays, my wife has a serow and comes as well. the problem I have is two fold, valve clearances need constant adjustment, I cant believe how much the close up in 3 hours, and also oil consumtion is a concern, wife and I out on Sunday for 2 hours round lanes in Thetford forrest, oil gone from just at the top of the glass to below the bottom, is this normal?

Any help or suggestions much appreciated

    Hi,
If the valve clearances are closing up that often you need to take the head off and inspect the valves. KTM's are generally very good for staying within tolerance.

It's NOT NORMAL!!! It's complete shit. There are a number of theories - mainly that the Oil Scraper Ring is no good and/or the valve stem seals were crushed at the factory.

Mine seems to use less oil, the harder it's ridden. Also - checking the oil window is very unreliable, I have to leave the bike up to 3 days to get the real result in the window!

Make sure you're not overfilling the oil (top of window is too high, some say). Measure the oil in and out is the best way.

As for valves - they will move most in the first couple of checks but make sure you're checking at "room temperature" and not really hot or cold.

If you come up with a fix for the oil usage - post it on here!
