    KTM Service cost

    Hi Guys,

Got a Duke 200 for my first bike a fortnight ago and took it for its first service with the dealer it was purchased from today.

Took them about 2 hours to complete the service, then they hit me with the bill for a total of £108.38.

They said they would have to post the invoice out because the mechanic was still logged into the bike on dealer.net and he had gone out on a test ride, so I don’t have a break down of the costs.

Asked the guy that put it through the till was this just for changing the oil and he said yes and giving the bike a good check over to make sure everything on the bike is ok after its done a few miles.

Didn’t question him any further as I have never had a bike serviced and didn’t know how much it costs.

Is £108 a fair price for a first service?

After getting home and thinking about it, I cant help feeling that I may have been stroked, surely changing the oil couldn’t cost over £100 and why should I pay for the bike to be checked for defects, surely this should be KTM’s responsibility to check new bikes and covered in the cost when purchasing the bike.

As I mentioned im new to the bike world so all advice is very much appreciated. I do know not to eat the yellow snow, so if its kept bike related, that would be great.

    Cheers

Do your own servicing from now on. Buy genuine filters and proper spec oil, keep the receipts.

As Kev said........most of that will be labour at around 40 pound an hr perhaps poss more. As long as it doesent invalidate any warranty to do yourself. Sense of satisfaction doing any work on your bike yourself even if it is only oil and filters.

Sounds bloody reasonable for 2 hours labour, oil, filter and VAT. Almost sounds like you got your oil and filter for free!

Sound very reasonable, I work in the motor trade in a main dealer, although budget services for cars are available now from £80 ish, a yearly manufacturer service is around £150, and thats oil and filter, pollen filter and a check over..
Our hourly labour rate is £80 per hour!

"hourly labour rate is £80 per hour!" rip off dealer prices ,find a good local guy like i done (and if,like me, u are not a confident enough mechanic to do it youself).. research as much as poss of any work u want doing and if poss supply ur own parts and fluids etc (that way u know what is going on/in bike). i had a new clutch pushrod, seal and slave unit fitted and a top master cylinder seal/spring rebuild kit fitted and bleed system.. took him 2 and half hours and cost £50 labour charge only(no vat)

6000 mile service on my soon to be gone Triumph Tiger 1050 at the dealer I bought it from just cost me £190 and that was with a 10% discount for booking on line.

But the scary one is the Land Rover Defender that needs a 48,000 mile service = £310 + VAT at an independent (about £800+ at a Franchised Stealer).

I did the 36,000 mile service myself as it's basically an oil and filter change, drain the fuel filter and a shed load of checks. I worked to Land Rover's own service schedule (easily found on-line) and even had my own stamp made up for the service book so it looks kosher. And at £10 for an oil filter and £70 worth of oil (that only cost me £40 as Halfords had a special offer on), I saved a bit over the £250+VAT I paid at 24,000.

I've looked at the service schedule for the 48,000 one and it's scarily complicated (it's one of the new TDCI engines), some of the jobs would require buying specialist tools, so it's off to the (independent) dealers for this one.
