    got my 640!! but...

got my bike yesterday, took it out for a quick spin as i dont have my liecence yet and OMG! i'm in love with it lol. it sounds so good and its got power on tap in every gear at any speed and it was running great.

my dad had it out again thismorning and was fine, and stopped 2 miles down the road and the temp gauge was flashing and the coolant light came on. so went back home and left it for 10 mins and it was still flashing, took the cap off the top of the rad and it was warm. so left it for 2 hours, still flashing!!!

so could there be a faulty temp sensor/sender and at what temp should the fan come on at or is it on permanently?

    cheers

Did you hear the fan come on? It should come on when the bike is hot. If it doesn't there is a fault in the fan or temp sensor.

Was there coolant in the rad? (It should sit at the level of the fins, but be clearly visible when the bike is upright), or was there collant pissing out anywhere?

    ...
Whatever the problem your dealer/seller needs the bike back to fix it, or to cover the cost of any fix, whether it be a faulty sensor, fan, or leak in the cooling system. ...You may just have run low on coolant, but that begs the question, why?

Provided the bike didn't seize-up I'd guess you've done no damage, but what about the previous owner?... Why was he selling, did he say, was it private or a dealer...?

    Needs checking out IMO.

i bought it from a dealer so i dont know why it was sold on, i know that the dealer goes to auctions or buys them from other people/dealers.

yeh there is plenty coolant in, its just below the rim on the inside and no i didn't hear the fan come on or see it come on.

Well, if the fan def didn't come on and the bike overheated, then you have a fan or a temp sensor problem, and as a dealer bike they should help you find the problem and fix it.

Another fairly common problem might be - the radiator cap wasn't correctly seated - thus allowing coolant to escape - usually down the breather pipe, so that you probably wouldn't notice during a ride.

The radiator cap needs a 'double action twist' to get a good sea. Other users on this site have also replaced their radiator caps - as they can lose their 'springieness' over time - at least that is a cheap and simple solution to a problem.

Either way, trust you get a quick and cheap solution and enjoy the local roads - I enjoy the 640 SM on the roads from Hawick to Hermitage Castle and over to Lockerbie or Alston.
