    The eagle has landed!

Just got a call from my dealer - my SMC has arrived

The only bad thing is that my insurance doesnt start until Friday

They are doing the PDI today, fitting the akra and remapping. I've got a half day booked on Friday so I reckon I'll get about 300 miles under her belt by tea time

    Bring it on.

Been in at lunchtime to have a look at my bike. I was told that there is no map for the SMC and that there is a sensor which adjusts the ECU to adapt to the increased airflow of the akra. The map is only needed with the full system which I couldnt afford.

Every EFI system has a certain range of self adjustment to compensate for different atmospheric/weather/heights etc. This is not specific for the SMC. Or for KTM for that matter.

Truth also is, if the change is small enough to be compensated by the EFI, don't expect miracles from an increase in power or torque. Hence the need to re-map with a full system.

I think it's a little strange that swapping the dead quiet stock silencer with cat for an absorpsion can without cat is still within the self adjusting range of the EFI. This could mean that it doesn't flow that much better. Removing the cats from the SM requires a re-map. Also with slip-ons.

Spoke to dealer again - he says its got a "lamba" sensor which the other SM's didnt have but the new SMC/E/Duke do have. It senses the airflow and sends a signal to the ECU to adjust the fuel/air mixture accordingly - err... I think

Sat on the bike before and can touch the floor just - I'm 5,11". Does feel light but not as light as the throttle which seems to have virtually no resistance. I just need to keep myself really busy between now and Friday - which is not easy when you're bored senseless at work

    Smile

Think I'm happy with that response, I assume the knowlageble KTMax will add some wisdom to this.
Throttle is light as you say, so too is the clutch, beautiful, slipper action is nice, hadn't thought about it much until I realised that when changing down approaching roundabouts both wheels stay in line, bike remains composed ready to tip in, the Duke would have been fish-tailing during downshifts.

Keep busy Flee, the wait will be worth it.

You dealer is selling you crap or he doesn't know what he's talking about Flee.

Every KTM with EFI has (a) narrow band lambda sensor(s). Just like all other current EFI bikes have one. It's an essential part of a modern FI system. It measures the amount of oxygen in the exhaust. That's why they're also called O2 sensors. This has nothing to do with the flow of the exhaust. On a KTM (and most other bikes) they are only used when the FI system goes into 'closed loop mode' during constant conditions. That is cruising on a steady throttle. ONLY then the lambda sensor data is used to adjust the mixture as close to 'Lambda 1' as possible (euro II/III). In normal terms very lean. At ALL other conditions (acceleration, varying throttle) the ECU looks directly in the fuel table (map) and the sensor is not used.

As said, the SMC is not different from any other model.

What is it with those fookin dealers?!?!...

That sounds a little fishy, I think all EFI/catalytic converter equipped engines have a lamba sensor in the exhaust. The normal SM certainly does, you can see it poking out of the exhaust opposite the bottom of the rad.
