Unhappy Duke II owners, can you have a look, jetted wrong ??

I have just noticed that my cans aren't fastened to my bike properly at the front mounting points ??

I have took a pic as I'm unsure which side of the bracket they are meant to be fastened too, the pic is of my left hand can looking from the back wheel,

Is the can supposed to be an the left of the bracket (ie the outside of the subframe, or on the inside, it looks like the inside would easuly fit, but the outside has a boss on it that the bracket could locate on) if this doesn't make sense, i'll post some more pics tomorrow.

Also I'm thinking maybe my bike used to have Akras and they may have been removed, what effect would this have if it was jetted for them and is now on the standard cans ???

I think your assumptions are correct...
I went down to the garage to check mine.. I found out that the bolt holding it on the left has gone missing, but, it seems to be the right way around

    Talking Thanks hoozit

Thanks for the reply hoozit, pics are much appreciated. I am just wondering whether they have simply vibrated out or not ? I'm going to put it back together tomorrow and bolt it up, think some threadlock will be an idea.

It's a pain to get to where you bolt up thru, I've take some plastics off to make it a bit easier.

    Thanks again

No problem. Yea, I think it vibrated off. I had the tail section apart before winter to weld back the rear sub-frame... again .. and I know I put it back.. but I guess I didn't do a very good job. I could've at least used some loctite..
On the right hand side the integrated nut had broken off and I lost it, so I put a new bolt and self-locking nut (don't know if that's the correct term, it's one of those with some plastic in it).. and it seems to hold. I think I'm gonna do the same on the left side.

The tail section on this bike is a bitch to take apart.. and now I have to do so to put that bolt back.. oh well, I wanted to get the plastics painted anyway.. and it keeps raining and snowing round these parts, so not much of a hurry.

What happened is that it broke where the holes for the bolts holding the rear plastic are. Got to hand it to those Austrians.. they picked out the worst spot to drill those holes. Any other solution would have been better.
First time it happened I had no idea, and was left with no electrics (as the grounding from the battery was connected to the piece that had broken off).
I can't say I know why.. guess just years of abuse have taken their toll on the bike. Mine's an 02 with 30k miles on the clock.
I also heard of other duke ownes having such issues.. esp the ones that take them offroad a lot.. like I did before it happened. I also had a significant off 2 days before it gave up.
Other have reported no such issues, although they ride with pillion often. But they stick to the street.
So I'm going with abuse on this one.

Mines only done 3500 miles, have you had any other problems in the time you have had it ?

Has it had to have any engine rebuilds or awt like that for the 30k that it's done ?

How often do you drop the oil on it ?

    Sorry for all the questions.

No worries mate. I've had it for the last 15k.
I did the oil changes every 3k, as suggested by the manual. Also valve clearance check at same interval. Had to adjust the valves once.
No engine rebuild.. still going good, but I don't know how much longer... hopefully a lot longer.
    Other issues.. let's see..
    - Lost a couple bolts here and there
    - Small oil leak one time from near the water pump.
    - Several tiny electrical faults. Wires rubbing off different stuff and breaking from the vibrations. No engine trouble. Each time I checked the spark plug it was nice and clean.
    - The back Y-pipe was getting loose due to vibrations, but was an easy fix.. just had to shave some more metal off so it tightens again (but this was like 2k miles ago, so long into its life)

    - Bent the wheels off-road. Bent the back wheel again in a pothole (but the tire was flat and I was leaned over)

So no serious issues with it. Don't know about the previous owner, but I don't ride it hard (I mean the engine). I seldom go over 6k rpm, very few wheelies (and crappy ones at best).
I plan to take it on a couple track days this year... which will prolly be the end of it

So, what can I say? Stick to road and light dirt tracks.. or green lanes as you call them. The suspension, wheels and subframe don't seem to be designed for more serious punishment (doh, some might say.. but I gave it a go anyway and can say for sure ). Check oil and especially coolant level regularly (mine at least seems to spit out a lot of coolant). There's no harm in doing the changes sooner if you ride harder. Check for missing and loose bolts from time to time.. use a lot of loctite.. and, most important.. have fun with it cheers
