Suitable Windshield for ktm 950 sm help!

Hi all, I have just purchased a 2007 ktm 950 sm. I was wondering whether you can fit the windshield from the new ktm 690 to my bike. I find that its okay round the doors and twisties, but on the motorway its utter shite due to wind blast.

I have purchased said windshield from M & S in Newcastle, so before I start drilling holes in head light cover can anyone with a similar windshield give me their opinion on if they're any good.

Also what is the best oil to use, I have heard mixed reports. It currently has shell advance ulta 10w/40 put in at its last service. It need topping up, can you top up with the same grade synthetic 4 stroke oil from a different manufacturer or does it have to be the same make oil. I tried to find this oil and went to 8 shell garages in the gateshead area and none of them supplied this oil.

Had this bike for 1 week now and loving it, I done 300 miles on sunday all over the lakes. Sports bikes are a thing of the past for me now, the grin factor is amazing. Much more fun and leaves sports bikes for dust on the twisties.

Hope you guys can help

PS Anyone delt with D I T Motorcycle repairs Limited in sunderland, any feedback would be appreciated.

Thanks;)

welcome aboard

I put the 690 screen on my 950sm dead easy to fit, (still not sure on the look of it) makes a hell of a difference through adds an extra 15/20 MPH to cruise speed. just check the template you get with it is to scale before you start drilling, mine was to small, must have being photo copied wrong scale. there should be a scale bar on it.

If you change your mind you can get always get a new light mask for 15/20 quid

As for oil my KTM dealer said you should only put in Motorex power synt 10/50 fully synthetic, but i guess any oil is better than no oil.

One last thing make sure you check oil levels often. it goes through it very quickly, mine drinks nearly 1/2 a litre every 1000k

enjoy

The 690 screen works a treat.

It looks a bit pants on the orange healight shroud. Buy a black one and keep the orange one for when you want the original look. (that's if you have an orange bike of course)

Fitted it myself this weekend..
Used a small drill then a dremel for the holes on the mask.
Took 3 minutes to get the mask off, another 15 to line up the holes properly and drill em.
Voila!

I put masking tape on headlight mask then marked out the where the four holes needed to be put. However before I proceeded to drill with the head light mask still in place, I checked how it was fixed and the fixing which I could not get access to behind the clocks was right inline with the windshield holes I marked. Lucky I didnt go blazing in with the drill cos I would have hit fixing points, few!

So can anyone tell me how you get to these screws that take the mask off as they are awkward as f**k.

Chris

Thanks for ya replies all.

Chris,

unscrew the 2 hexagon screws just as you would if you changed the light bulb (look in the manual if unsure)

Then unscrew the 4 black screws that holds the speedo kit (not the actual speedo it self but the plastic)

Lift speedo assembly up and away a bit
Now you will see there are 2 screws that holds the sides to the mask, small screwdriver will remove them.

Now the light and the mask are free.. 4 screws holds the mask to the light (or vice versa), unscrew them and the mask are free..

Its really easy! Takes 5 minutes maximum!

Hello all, Thanks for all your replies and help. However I have some news which may supprize all of you.

I managed to fit my windshield without a hitch only to find that it is utter shite!!! I found that when I was out on bike the wind noise level has now increased to a point where I will need earplugs. Also the wind is kept off my upper torso, but my arms and head area are suffering from turbulense from the screen.

So to that end I will be getting a new head light mask for 20 quid and replacing the new screen with the old clear one which is a lot smaller and more functional. It aint as good to look at than the newer 690 black screen but it doesnt plague me with turbulence and unbearable wind noise and whistling round the helmet/skid lid area.

Pretty disapointed but a lesson learnt all that looks good may not serve its purpose in the end.

So all be warned waste 40 quid if you want, but dont say I didnt tell yaz.

Just for your information the old screen is quite small and clear, it just clips on to the very small black windsheild and is held on by a little clamp with 2 grub screws, no holes required. Dont ask me what make it is or where it came from cos it was on the bike when I bought it.

Thanks again for all your help and happy riding.

regards

Chris

I fitted mine last weekend but havent been able to try it until today due to gailforce winds and rain/snow.
Anyway.. I have a 30 mile one way ride to work with speeds around 90-135km/h.. The screen really helps up to around 130km/h. I didnt notice any more noise or more wind at my arms.. Always ride with earplugs anyway since I dont want tinitus etc.. in a normal helmet noiselevels above 100km/h is 95-105db (or more in certain cases).. and around 100db one should only be in 15min or your ears will be damaged... sorry for the side track..

anyway.. I am 6'2" and I notice a big improvement for longer trips with the 690 screen attached to the 950sm :)

To bad it didnt work out for you.

I am a bit of a dwarf at 5' 6''. I put the screen in exactly the same place as ZZZak's photo above. A guy at a bike meet last nite in washington new town, gateshead told me to remove the anti glare foam to see if that made any difference. Its the piece of foam that sticks onto the bottom lip on the inside of the screen. I will give it another try this weekend.

Cheers

Chris

Aah.. the foam is still on my shelf.. never fitted it for some reason.. I thought.. "ah dang.. the foam is for the 690 n not the 950.. I'll skip it"... :D

btw, I was reading around of different boards and tall guys had mounted it higher so I did to.. it is as high as zzzaks and maybe a few millimeter higher..

only reason I never went with his screen was because of that.. my 6'2" :)
