SMT Headlight bulb replacement...

Hi - Has anyone had to replace their headlight bulb on an SMT? ...Without going in through that little hatch on the right hand-side of the inner fairing? This is the logical way, but with stumpy, podgy hands access isn't easy and I could only attempt it one-handed and with seeing what I was doing...In the end had to gaffer tape the new bulb in place. (I was away at the time).

I did take off the outer-fairing on the right hand-side for slightly better access, but that didn't help much at all.

Any ideas??

You need to strip the fairing and remove the headlamp unit . It's not too difficult once you locate the well concealed screws that hold it together . Use the online parts diagram for an idea how it comes apart . About a half hour job once you done it once

Thanks for that, Kernow. Didn't think I was being a wanker, KTM design department were. Bizarre that it should be as such...for what should just be a simple task. Dread to think how annoying it would be should your bulb blow frequently. I was tripping away when it blew and was very limited...Do I do it beside the road...at the next hotel...Will I get it apart and back together? ....In the end I pissed around through that hatch and gaffer-taped it in. Lasted for the rest of the trip, no probe!

I reckon you need to treat the headlamp bulb as a service item . Replace every 10 k or whatever seems right . At least they usually only blow on one filament so you still have dip or main .

Had to do this recently on a friends 990SMT. Once you have done it once or twice, you can strip, replace, rebuild in 10/15 minutes. First time I had to replace the bulb I spent over an hour swearing at the bloody hatch before I broke out the tool kit.
