I currently have an 07 250excf and am looking for something bigger as i do quite a few road miles to get to trails and feel like i'm ringing the neck out of the 250. Hitting bout 70-80 mph on roads. Which would be the better of the two, the 400 or the 450? I,m happy with the power of the 250 on the trails, but don,t wanna be changing pistons every 80-100 hours, as a day out riding for me is 8-10 hours so thats a new piston every 4 months. There is currently a 400 on flea bay, 06-07 low miles, looks clean. Would i regret giving up the 250?? Thanx.

Yep go for the 400 any day. The weight is barley noticable and you will ride it to your ability anyway. Cant understand the 250 as a trailie myself unless you plan to go racing.

The problem you will still have with the 400 though is they are still shyte on the road. My forks shake like jelly on the tarmac and I warble many a song to myself on route to the lanes !

had 09 450 for 2 years/320hrs for trailriding
pick up new 011 400exc tomorrow
i know it's the same frame, sussies etc and only 55cc's ish
but check the compression ratio, that's what mkes it a traily...............12:1,,,,,,,,,,,,,,down to 11:1
that means smoother, softer, linear power which you can use and enjoy
no brainer really

06-07 400exc is the rfs, and is a great engine but is a little tame .
Like a 250excf but without the top end rev on, easy to use and goes forever .

Lots of options with upgrades cam change ,453 & 473
