I had no issues with my 790, now I am dreaming of cam wear and blocked oil jets

How do you think l feel, after dropping close to 11k on an smt.
Getting rid of Two keepers to buy it.

It’s 2024 - you can buy extra years warranty with every car and bike manufacturer-what planet are KTM on ?

I was told 3wks ago if I kept up my dealer services warranty is extended to 4yrs

I am going to check if I can do that

i need to pile 20k miles on before the warranty expires and that will take me 3 yr


I was hoping the problem was poor quality control on the cam hardening which is like rolling a dice and at the current price i thought it was worth the gamble.
But if it is low oil supply rate or pressure then it seems more like a dead cert at some mileage rather than a gamble .

Don't you know that Honda have been selling engines with OHC in alloy heads since 1961 and there were some weak engines early on.

BUT that is 63 years of progress - can't you just copy a cam lubrication design that works?

It's too early to tell, but I don't think even the FB group is siding with the 'low pressure or blocked jets' claim being the cause.
It's just an interesting observation right now.

Also someone on that FB group said they'd had their cam tested and the result was poor surface hardening.

So we'll just have to wait and see where this goes.

I forgot, KTM released a tech update for the LC8 in around 2008, they superseded the oil pressure release valve, from memory they changed how the spring was held in place, the spring and the release piston design.

Takes miles to wear cams Terry, so I think you'll be fine.

My own 990 is a bit of a garage princess, spends more time looking good that being ridden (so I am not being cheeky here).

Bit of real world feedback for you all.

I checked my 2019 790 Adv R valve clearances and cam condition yesterday, its on 17'600 ish miles, x1 intake and x1 exhaust shims need replacing and the cams are absolutely fine.

I like to polish the jural areas with a bit of fine wire wool before install.

Had a look at my 2023 smt today, cams look fine 3000 miles, they still should look good at 90.000 miles really with the oils we have now, haven't got a clue what the little red thing is but I've been a ships tech for 15 years, and was a bike tech 20 yrs ago so techs moved on a lot, not so sure for the better but all looks good on the smt, fitting a dirt tricks cam tensioner next week to stop the tickover rattle

Did you remove the bridge, other cams look the same?

Is this sudden off-ramp common with modern cams, not seen such an aggressive closing before.

I was just looking at condition of the cams and pics looks like there's a bit of wear but there's no pickup on the lobes, feels smooth and no step, didn't crank the bike over I was just checking condition, nothing I could do if there is a problem anyway, you can just about see the cams through the bridge at different angles, turned it over with socket on the crank nut
