You could set it higher in TuneECU.

Could also be that the temp sensor is knackered so reading higher than it actually is, which could result in the idle running too low for the actual engine temp - check in TuneECU.

 

I'm completely new to Tune ECU (lot simpler with carbs).

How do I set it higher in Tune ECU? I did a reset, which probably made it worse!! Trying to do this, change tyres and watch football at the same time 🤯

Yep completely agree! Story of my life TBH.

 

Adjust the throttle cable tension...First thing...make sure its not slack..if it is...then adjust to correct, if not slightly over tighten to get the revs up..at the least, its a botch fix...sort out properly next week

 

If you do play with tune ecu...find the option to save current map..and errrr save it to your comp as OE map...then play at leisure..knowing you can reload OE map....

 

If you go new TPS route...this will help a lot....worked for me on a 2008 990...

 

The other thing to bear in mind is that if it stalling when pulling in clutch - commonly the ignition sensor needs replacing. But, your low idle is likely the culprit here.

 

The idle is set in the ecu.
If it is "too low' it has either been changed in the ecu or there is a fault that is preventing the ecu from controlling it properly.

If this stalling is a recent fault then adjusting the idle isn't the answer.

 

I know that..but he, her, she, he them msy have no time to sort the issue B4 the trail ride...just think it may be a short trail type fix...options options

 

What are the revs at tickover....
Could be blocked jet...too many variables
Try reset TPS...from stone cold..
turn it all on , twist to full throttle steadily , then back to zero , turn off everything from key and switch , then turn on and check?
This also works on a 690....🤩

No such procedure on the 990.

 

The problem with over tightening the throttle cable is it might then fail the tps initialisation when powering on.

 

Worth a mench, trying to remember all the tricks etc from back in the day....
TpS and the 990 are mind blowing...
Hence my video...spent three weeks trouble shooting back 2012 with my old 08....
Try a fix...start from cold...try Nother fix....start it up...didn't work...repeat...and commuting on it too...fecking thing🤯🤯

 

Also, there is no idle screw to adjust idle speed. There is a throttle stop screw that sets the zero position.

If you adjust that screw to force a higher idle you will have then moved your whole fuel map out (towards lean), so don't do that.

 

I think your missing my original point...when I first got my 990 in 08...the previous owner had to much throttle play on the err throttle...I prefer no throttle play/slack...so adjusted the cables to suit..First attemp left the throttle slightly engaged...second attempt perfect...
So if the OP set his cables, tighter..it may suit his needs for his upcoming weekend...not a permanent fix...but it will be just like running on partial throttle and will do no harm to mapping....as TPS won't gather that info...when TPS has gone, it thinks that the idle Speed is 4-5k when it should lower...hence when you think you have bit sorted from cold it's fine..the bike warms up and 4-,5k again...
Anyhow worth a try as a short term fix...

 

That's not how it works, if the throttle cable is too tight it won't allow the throttles to zero when you turn the ignition on.

If the throttles don't zero the tps check fails and that stores an error code. I'm not sure what effect that has on the running.

If you adjust throttle stop then that can effect the map. I know adjusting the throttle stop hasn't been mentioned in this thread but I thought it might be useful to warn Bruce now just in case he sees it and is tempted to turn it.

The guy just wants to do the weekend...the old 08s weren't as fickle as my last 13 plate 990r , obviously...I just think he's trying to get the weekend done..
If it is the TPS, and its fecked, then a little tweak on the cables, shouldn't hurt...no expert mind..just an old skool guy...reflecting on his experience with the fickle 990👍🫣

 

I actually took my 990 into a KTM stealer when the TPS was playing up...new throttle bodies needed at £1k+ was his answer......sorted it myself...eventually...£75 new TPS...kin stealers...

 

Yeah, when I get home later today I'll have a read through the workshop manual to see if it hints at what the ecu does if the tps initialisation fails.

The ones I've looked at so far have failed in the mid range so it hasn't effected idle.

 

So, after 15 mins reset is idling better, no stalling. It's about 1200-1400, so still a bit low.

Compared map on Tune ECU, it same as the standard.

Thinking, if it's low idle speed, can't be TPS right? Would be running high if TPS fault?

I wonder if it is a temp sensor thing (guessing coolant temp sensor). Will do to get me through the weekend all being well, but definitely needs some attention as engine just feels rough.

Idle speed should only be 1400 (from memory) for the 990s. If it's stalling at that, that was my point about ignition sensor.

 

Oh god, now what! Just refitting wheels after changing tyres. Pumped the rear brake and the window on the brake cylinder flew off!

This doesn't look like it screws on, but I can believe it just pops in. Anyone have any experience of this!!

 

Oh yeah, they do that. You are very lucky you found it, last time for me was mid-ride.

A few gents on advrider sell kits, but you can get a new o-ring and even a bit of adhesive on the rim and just pop it back in.

So, got to the event and had to abandon. It just kept stalling, which makes trying to do technical off-road stuff impossible.

One of the instructors has a couple of 990s and had a go, same problem, so it's not just me!! It even stalled on the way home on the motorway when I pulled clutch in!

I stopped at a KTM garage and the mechanic listened to it idling and said he thought it was fine and he didn't think TPS would be an issue so to check mapping 🤔

I'm gonna strip it again as need to sort the oil leak. The love/hate relationship is tipping!!

 

Any guesses where the oil leak is coming from...
