I just use the sink with some washing powder and a some soda crystals, then spray with putoline and put the filters in a bag ang give them a good squeeze. Usually keep 4 or 5 spares clean and ready to go.

 

I use the Putoline kit but only coz I got a good price. The Putoline cleaner is just purified paraffin which you can get for a fraction of the price from B&Q. I re oil with Motul air filter oil which is a nice deep blue colour so I can see if the filter gets full coverage.

I too use the Putoline kit. As Lord Triumph said the cleaner is paraffin. Kit works well. I clean the filters in the cleaning fluid, then wash them with water and washing agent. When dry I soak them with the dark blue Putoline oil, squeeze excess oil out, let dry 24 to 48 hours. I always do at least two filters. Got 5 of them with the filter carrier so changing them is quick and easy.

 

Using this at the mo but don't find it feels tacky/sticky at all. Even after 48 hours.

Have some No Toil bio stuff I may switch to and try out.

The orig filter that came oiled in the bike when new was really sticky. But not blue. So must been Motorex? Couldn't find out if was Bio or not

 

I'm no expert but I would have thought that water soluble oil is a bad idea especially if you ride your bike in wet conditions or go through fords. (It must make cleaning the filter easy but that's the only good thing that I can think of).

 

It's not water soluble, its bio-degradable which means its safe to put down the sink. Washing powder will break down most oils given enough time, that's how it takes out the oily stains you find on your pants.

Fit a Lectron, you'll never have to clean the filter after that, the Lectron has tiny little hands that flick the bits of dirt off the filter!

BTW I'm allowed to take the piss as I have a Lectron fitted to my bike.

 

You guys use the putoline action filter oil then and wash with parrafin followed by fairly liquid/washing powder with good results then?

 

I use No Toil - I am happy with the results - missus not to happy with me using the washing machine though!

I've been really lazy on the admin size and got about 5 to clean....[emoji51] Silkolene 5L can and Motorex oil..... works ok.

Will be taking the 300 out as it's the only one with a clean spare filter....[emoji12]

Clean with petty ...leave for 24hr ...then silkolene foam filter spray and grease round lip when fitting ....do 3 at a time

Did it once in the washing machine, that was a nice smell in the bathroom for the next three days. My wife was less amazed...

I degrease the filter with white spirit in a bucket. This part is just to remove oil from filter.

The bucket has a lid so can use again and again.

Then wash in the sink with hot soapy (fairy) water.

Allow to dry and re oil

Like new

 

I used our new washing machine a few years ago. The stink lasted weeks even with special washing machine cleaning stuff. Was in the dog house for a while.
Now use putolene in a bucket, let dry on hooks in the garage and re-oil with putoline in a big biscuit tin. Squeeze out, let dry, refit, job done.
Bastard of a spider that eggy.

 

No-toil.. I don't take my 7 grand precious any-fucking-where near water deep enough to get into the airbox!!

i have only ever used petrol to clean air filter hang on washing line to dry then reoil with putoline filter oil in a plastic bag done this for years with just two filters doesnt seem to break down the foam in any way

 

Does any one just chuck em away and buy new ones cleaning them is a right pain

 

The very few times I used petrol to clean the filter it broke down the glue of the filter. Every time!

Going to try paraffin though

 

never had any issues useing petrol never leave them for hours lol just soak and wring out then dry been useing the same two air filters rotating now for 3 years no sign of foam breaking down etc,i then use the petrol that is left in my strimmer

 

Very good at scrubbing filters is my spider

 

Twin air both times broke up from petrol. In the petrol no longer than a few mins max.

 

Cheers for the info, I'm going to use paraffin I think. I might try the rock oil bio degradable air filter oil see how it works out.

 

I've got 6 or 7, when they're all dirty I throw them in a big bucket of hot soapy water. Prod/ stir with a stick and let them soak. Then rinse them with a hose and let them dry. Takes about five minutes, all done outside and if done right I can get away without touching them
