Coolant leak - water pump shaft seal gone?

Or going? After a 'spirited' ride on Sunday I got home, checked the engine oil level, then later noticed this

Looks like a bit of coolant has vented from the drain hole. First time I've noticed this, bike is a 2009 R with almost 15,000 miles on it.

Doesn't seem to be any oil in coolant or vice versa.

Any suggestions/ hints/ tips/tricks gratefully received!

Looks possible, you'll need to see how bad it gets.
Mine was worse on the hottest days. Then I changed the rad cap and seals.

There's a kit, with seals and shaft o-ring, buy it now. It's not expensive.

The best procedure is to take the whole case off rather than just the water pump housing. This lets you push the seals in with less risk of damaging the lip. There's a post on here somewhere that gives the details.

Then you'll have the fun of raising the front by 50cm to bleed it all afterwards!

The post was in here...

But when I looked the procedure has been removed. Last post on that thread gives the steps, if you get the wheels off the ground by one inch you can lean it far enough on the sidestand to not have to drain any oil.

Thanks, already looking at seal kit etc, will order and keep an eye on it.

Done the coolant bleeding before, it's a bit of a pain I agree but it wasn't too tricky with the lift I've got, made short work of it really, so I don't have any fears there!

I got 99 problems but that ain't one!

I've done the trick with the sidestand with blocks under the wheels before as well to check the clutch bolts before, seems to work well enough to not drain the oil, only loose a tiny bit

Thanks - already had that updated procedure but might be helpful for others.

Bit of an update on this as it's been a few months. Coolant weep has been intermittent, some rides a few drops, some none. Had a more urgent issue involving high idle / rough running so that took priority (now sorted) >>SEE HERE<<

Won't be riding for the next few weekends due to family stuff so perfect time to tackle the water pump seals. Got a seal kit and some other bits from Trevor Pope KTM (excellent service again) including the bearing (#15)

Made a start yesterday, stripped off the fairings (dead easy, takes minutes)

And got them safely out of the way;

And dropped the oil out.

Thankfully it's free from any coolant. I thought it was, from checking the dipstick, but better safe than sorry. Oil & filter have <1,000 miles so will be going back in on completion.

Next up: get the bike up on the lift, drain the coolant and get the water pump / clutch covers off.

I had to change phones so lost a load of photos I took of the job as I went along.

I'm trying to recover them but in the meantime I found this which I uploaded at the time.

I rigged up a spare fuel fuel hose and cable so I could run the bike without the tank in place

Probably nearly a thousand miles since changing the seals and no more leaks as far as I can tell
