Fork oil?!

2020 standard OEM WP Apex forks - what fork oil have you used?

Workshop manual states: SAE4 48601166S1 (presumably WP)
You can buy this KTM labelled fork oil BUT.... only in 5 litre amounts! (£100+)

RESEARCH...
- the SAE4 designation is meaningless, there is no SAE / W standard set for fork oil. One brand of 4W fork oil has different viscosity ratings (cSt) to another 4W brand!

- believe me.... there is no data out there on the OEM oil i.e no viscosity data 🤬

My suspension was set up for me and I'm happy as is....
  • a small change in viscosity ratings will require tweeking of the forks setup again
  • a larger variation may not be able to be offset by tweeking settings
A pain in the butt when you don't know the viscosity ratings of the OEM oil 😡

TIP; Google "motorcycle fork oil viscosity chart" ;-)
...this is a great resource:

I think there was a conversation about this and from what I found the "consumer" version (presumably what KTM gets supplied in bulk) is Motorex Racing Fork Oil 4W

Referring to comparison charts the viscosity is 16 cSt @ 40c

So you have a large variety of similar options, or could put this in, 15 quid for a liter.

I recently ran into this issue when rebuilding some automotive racing Öhlins shocks, the cunts didn't wanna tell me the viscosity but fortunately the rebuild kit came with the right oil, good thing too because from what I read online it was either Öhlins No 2.5 (11 cSt) or Öhlins No.5 (22 cSt) which is a huge fucking difference lol...

I'm trying to get WP to let me have the data sheet for the oem oil..... watch this space!
Yes, a very good chance that the Motorex 4W could be the stuff but if not I could be faced with having to remove the forks again and try something else.
Trial and error is what I'm trying to avoid.

Let us know if you find anything but I'm 90% sure the motorex stuff is right.

WP-Suspension Customer Service United Kingdom said:
We understand that you are looking for a data sheet however this isn’t something we can supply to you. We can confirm the recommended oil is SAE 4 weight and would kindly reiterate that WP Suspension UK have approved 48601166S1 - FRONT FORK FLUID SAE 4 5L. There may be aftermarket solutions available, however, we cannot comment or recommend those as they are not manufactured or tested by us.

We trust this information helps and Should there be anything else we can help you with in the future, then please reach us via the contact section on the website.

Kind regards,
Louise

No reason they can't supply the data sheet, just that they WON'T

Ahahahaha as expected 😂

Cunts... I'd just bite the bullet on Motorex 4W

My email to Öhlins:

"Good evening,

Thank you for that, I'll call them tomorrow.
Would you be able tell me what is the actual oil specification for reference?

Thank you!

Kind regards,"

The response (and i shit you not this is unedited):

"Morning
Sorry not :)

Best Regards"
