Hi
I am new to this forum.
I have recently brought a ktm 250 exc tpi and was wondering if any of you guys are from the Area and go on rides out. I have noticed a few different groups of bikes on Sundays around the area. I have a van so can also travel. I am looking to join the East Midlands TRF.

Hello & welcome

I think that you may have answered your own question. The TRF are a good start. They will know which routes are assessable or not (all legal riding)

You could always purchase a Ordnance Survey Landranger Map that covers your local area, that will show Byways Open to all traffic (BOATS). May need 2 or 3 different maps. Some like to still do it the old fashioned way of using maps.

The best way that we find is a Garmin that you can plan routes on a PC and then load onto the Garmin, to follow like a Sat Nav. We still use the hard copy maps, to help plan the routes.

Best of luck

I use viewranger with OS Maps to help plot routes, although very few near me so tend to either go to Salisbury area which I now have a few routes in and around, got buddy on south downs who has a great selection of trails nearby and do guided days in Wales.

Local TRF don't do much, when they do the spaces on the ride go very quickly, and the one time (in 2 years) I got on a ride with them it was about 90% tarmac anyway so probably will let membership lapse next year - YMMV with local TRF.

Yeah, most county councils - the ones responsible for highways - have a definitive map on-line. The map will/should show all of the byways open to all traffic (boats).

When l first started trail riding my local area, l bought all of the local ordnance survey maps (the more legible scale, orange cover series - l forget the name) and marked it all up and learnt the routes from there. Loads more choice now with all of the mapping apps etc.
