Hi,

My 8'S been leaking oil, finally got it diagnosed as the oil pump cover seal on Left hand side of engine, Its the cover sits above the oil filter and rear drain plug near the rear sprocket, not the water pump!

Local dealer Albion has been great, but they’ve never seen this before and can't find a new seal (only a pre shaped big rubber o ring type thingy) in the UK so have had to order from Austria, not normally a problem…. but I'm off on a trip round Europe next week and possibly a few laps of the nurburgring if I time it right and my bike's in the work shop slowly leaking finest synthetic onto the floor and no parts in the UK:eek:

Any one got any experience of what KTM are like for parts shipping or ideas where I could find a new seal?

Cheers
Rich

My last parts took about 10 working days, order was dispatched to dealer before posting me......for a common part (water pump seals)...

Will your dealer take the part from a new bike maybe one on display in showroom, to be replaced by your new parts when they arrive You may have to pay more labour tho?

How difficult is it to get at this? I know one end of a screwdiver from another but mechanically incompetant!!!
I can remove this for you (off my bikes) but is it a stock RC8 (08 model) or RC8R (10 model).
I have both not being used.
Get back to me asap.

Hi Chocky

hanks for the reply, Bike is already at the dealers, so I won't get the double postage delay :) that will help

already thought about asking then to swap the part on another bike but they haven't got another 8 in stock, new or used

Phoned a couple of other dealers today to see if they had the part, none in UK apparantly but helpful chap at Gear 4 checked ktm Austria an there are plenty there, so fingers crossed that it gets here on time...........

PLC

its a stock 08 RC8 (wish it was an RC8R)

Easy to get to once the lower side panel is off, it's just above the oil filter and rear drain plug bolt, would send a pic, but the bike is in the dealers 40 miles away, If you've got a copy of the parts fiche or workshop manual, (which I blagged from a link on here) it's the left hand oil pump cover gasket, its just held on by 3 or 4 bolts.

Only Problem I can see is that once the covers off it will dump its oil on your floor.......so maybe not a good idea?

let me know what you think? If you haven't got the fiche / workshop manual I can send a copy when I get home , at work now and they are at home.

the dealer hasn't said it won't be here in time, just didn't sound too convinced that it would?

Top man indeed that PLC !

Another reason to stick with the RC8 can't imagine getting this sort of support, from people I've never met on any other forum.......

Lets hope the seal turns up so Richy Rich can go touring. If not then we will pull mine apart and get him going.(08 booked in for Monday just in case)
Whilst I sit over here in my Ivory Tower I am not immune to someone elses plight!!!!
If you saw a biker broken down I am sure you would see what you can do?

if you give me the KTM part number I can ask my dealer how quick he can get it. If its in stock, what I doubt, I could buy it and DHL it to you. Most of the time if parts are not in stock the delivery times are just estimated ...
should we try?

Steve,

my dealer in the uk ordered the part from KTM Austria on Monday as none in the UK. they checked and they are in stock at the factory. they hope it will be here on Friday (tomorrow) if not Plan B is for PLC to get the part from one of his bikes

the part number is 61238008150 , do you know how quickly DHL can ship from you to uk? May be worth checking with your local dealer if you dont mind?

I may end up with a stock pile of these as they all turn up together :)

Thanks!

Rich,

normally it takes one day if I DHL documents to our business partners in London. So if you in the area Southhampton it may take a few hours longer. I think the distribution hub of DHL is in London. However, I will check with my dealer at 9. (Its 6:45 now). I doubt that he has it in stock and ordering will take a few days although I am only about 200 mls away from the factory.
Can you ride the bike without destroying the engine? I mean if it is not too bad you could tell me the first destination where you go and I could try to ship it there...

Cheers Steve

Steve,

if its in stock in your local dealer lets go for it, it may arrive in time, but if you'll have to order from the factory I think it would be too late. I don't want to start the trip without it fitted as it's leaking quite near the back wheel and on a long run I think I may get some oil on the back tyre !

If you have one at local dealer it needs to be shipped to:

Richard Ostler
Albion Motorcycles
Unit 2, Merriot House
Hennock Road
Marsh Barton Industrial Estate
Exeter,
Devon
EX2 8NJ
UK

let me know and Of course I'll cover all the costs and any expenses you run up.

Thanks for the help!

Rich, you're welcome!
I understand the problem better now. No, dont ride it when the possibilty exists that it will blow oil on the back tire. Murphys law! Its 8:45 now and as soon as they open I'll call but fear that this it is not in stock.
I only charge you the costs for the seal, the transport is free for friends ;o)

Talk to you later, cheers

Rich,

I cant get the darn seal in Vienna, my dealer said if I order it now its most probably there on Tuesday or Wednesday :(((
I check now which is the closest dealer to me in lower Austria, I guess its just 30 mls, I'll call and see what they say.

Cheers

Same shit in lower Austria :(
Not the 30 mls are the problem, but he does not have the seal. I fear we are in serious trouble. I also called Schruf Moto who is just 22 mls away but he is a enduro and moto-x specialist, needless to say that he has no stock for street bikes :(

Rich,
Just gave Premier Bikes a shout, they haven't got it but did suggest 'Red Line', they also said its the sort of thing that they've never needed.

Steve,

Thanks for Trying mate, really appreciated. I think there is only one in world and it's left the factory and on the way to my dealer........

Drinky,

I've tried Albion, Fowlers, RedLine and Gear 4, all have said its not a stock item they hold and they can't see any anywhere else in the country. Gaer 4 checked and they are in stock in Austria. fingers crossed. I'll find out soon if the one from Austria has arived if not it's PLC and plan B, as you say what a star!
