Drench and wring the filter in air filter cleaner, then blow from inside out with compressed air and let dry. Then soak with Putoline air filter oil but dont use the bio shit as it will let water through. Squeeze the filter to get rid of excess oil and let dry for 24 hours. Done.

I always do more than one filter and when ready I put them on the plastic cage (13 bucks per piece) and store them in plastic bags until needed. :)

Take out filter and throw away.
Buy new filter beforehand, preferably pre-oiled, and fit.
Ride bike.
I'm still getting drips from my current filter that I oiled myself about two months or so ago.

Ask david Dudley about using petrol to clean his filter at erzburg this year
He thought the bike was fooked it wouldnt rev out lost loads of power
And he was sure he'd cleaned it well Untill he came home and fit a fresh one

I clean mine with the bio cleaner in bucket provided then wash again in hot soapy water with a little of the bio cleaner in
You would be amazed at the shit the second wash gets out
Even after a thorough first wash
I usually do 3 at a time ring out hang to dry
Then submerse in bucket of filter oil wring out well then hang to dry

I know you shouldn't use petrol but I do as it removes the good filter oil and dirt well. I then wash with cheap washing up liquid. Rinse, rinse and rinse again in clean cold water. Leave to drip dry (I do five filters in one go). Once dry check all seams for separation (petrol kills the glue eventually) if not structurally intact its time to bin it.

Good clean dry filters I put into a zip lock bag and pour in a slosh of Putoline Action Fluid or Silkolenes equally hideous filter oil. Squeeze the bag around the filter till the filter is well soaked throughout the foam. Snip corner off bag and squeeze excess oil back into tin (why waste it). Never wring or twist the filters!

Fit filter to frame, smear grease on mating surfaces and re fit to bike. Making sure it's properly sealed.

Pour old petrol filter oil mess into old tubs and dispose of appropriately. Don't chick it anywhere as you'll never get rid of the stuff.

Don't use spray on shite. Water gets through. Using it once made me have to run my bike out of a special so I could record a time. Never had water issues with the dunk in juice.

Whatever you decide to do, make sure it is cleaned, dried and oiled with proper filter oil. It is sudden death to a 2 stroke if you don't. Don't buy a pre oiled one as you will have to buy stuff to clean and oil it anyway. We generally use a filter per moto so that is 3 filters per race meeting. Bob.

petrol first, then fairy liquid and warm water. rinse very very very thoroughly. dry; oil with putoline filter oil (the only thing that stops water and as it is blue you can see that all is covered) then grease rim before fitting.

keep a 99p bucket that you use for nothing else.

petrol does not destroy filters - unless you buy 24 mx etc w*nky filters.

dump the manky petrol in your waste oil container and either take to the dump or have an arrangement with your local workshop.

I always have one 'good to go' so the bike is never without a clean filter.

I now have 3 air filters & if i'm riding somewhere dusty or muddy over a weekend of riding i'll fit a clean/oiled one & take a spare & swap it over before the next days ride.

So as to keep them in shape after washing/cleaning/oiling I use old plastic sweet containers left over from Xmas excesses. I use another circle of foam for the air filter to sit on so that any excess oil from the filter is soaked up so that once installed it doesn't seep to the lowest part of the filter & drip into the airbox.

Soak mine in hot water and Bilgex(boat degreaser) then put them through the washing machine on a hot one. When I built the w/shop I installed a w/machine purely for my own use, muddy kit, filters etc.

If you get pooling of oil in the bottom of your airbox it maybe because you have not squeezed out the excess or it's not sticky enough to stay in place within the filter cells. Better to over oil it and clean your airbox/garage floor rather than dust a crap make it through the filter.

I know that some on here think any bio type filter oil is worse than useless but I too use NoToil and have done for years with no problems at all. The engine always looks fine inside and it's so easy to do I am happy to fit a clean fresh filter every ride or two.

If you don't like the oil, their own brand filters are excellent. In my experience, they flow better yet filter better than the Twin Air filters. Not particularly easy to get hold of but well worth it if you come across them.

Hi,
Sorry to bring this topic back up, Just wondering, I have just bought a tin of MOTUL MC CARE air filter oil spray, I have the filter cleaned spotless now and would like to get it back on the bike asap. after reading this post I am now concerned if it is worth using this Motul spray, I hoped this would be suitable, Is best not to use?
Also curious what grease I need for the seal.

Thanks, Steve

I started using a filter sand cover a while ago. Thing cost £10.
Went from changing the filter with a clean one every ride - to now changing the filter when there's anything on it, which is on average every 3 months or more.
Now after every ride - rinse the sand cover under the outside tap and chuck it into the washing machine along with my clothes.
Saves a fortune in filter cleaning products/filter oils.

Stidge, just normal everyday cheap grease for the mating surfaces.

The Motul spray will work if your not in lots of wet places. Just make sure you really dose up the inside and outside and work it well into the foam- not just a bit of spray over the outside! As long as you're not revving hard in wet places it should do its job.

Next time you could get a tin of or a dunk in kit from Putoline or Silkolene? Spray on works for mx type riding more than enduro. Dunk in is messy and costs more but engine parts cost even more.

Dalmaboy, I'm liking the sand cover idea!

we use the 'old fashioned' hair nets over the oiled filter stops bigger particles especially if you ride woodchip as I found 'splinters' embeded into filters and were throwing them away every 2/3 rides now last much better - got em off fleebay bout £4 for 100 fits a treat cos they have elasticated edges just chuckem away at end of the days ride !
