Guys,

What's yor experiences with buying bike for the nippers?

did you go electric or straight to petrol?

I mean the idea of electric appeals and I saw a guy with his son a few weeks back riding a wicked 36v bike in the park and we had a chat. However I can't help thinking its a short term purchase and a petrol bike would last longer, Perhaps I'm wrong.
Also with a petrol bike riding will be restricted to a track or private land. I don't have any farmland nearby but I have a track a couple of miles away. but at ÂŁ25 per days riding it will soon mount up.
Whearas the electric bike can be riden in the garden as well as the local parks for free.

And what about brands? Stick to main ones or are the the others ok? Load of 50cc kids bikes on eBay for ÂŁ200 but brands if never heard of. Do these last or are best avoided?

Purchase cost also a factor, for example a KXD petrol bike ÂŁ200, a Rocket Db500 electric bike ÂŁ350 and a Yamaha pw50 (used) ÂŁ250 -ÂŁ1200.

So there it is, I'd really appreciate any advise or tips or suggestions you have.

PW50 is a classic and you will probably be able to sell it for what you paid for it. Will be reliable, adjustable throttle limiter, has parts availability and everyone gets them to begin with. They are a good choice and popular for a reason. If I was looking to get one then that is what I would go for, no doubt. The old Honda QR was a similar thing.

Otherwise, you could maybe go for a quad, something like a Suzuki LT50. Might give a bit more confidence if your kid isn't too confident and he will still enoy it.

I know the Oset electric bikes are good but they are a bit spendy and in demand, so might be more than you want to spend.

Im a fan of electric but it does have its limitations. If the kid wants something to have a play on and have no experience then I would go electric. If they intend to start racing then you are going to be upgrading electric for good old fashioned petrol pretty soon. Have a search on here for Kuberg and Oset. I sell Kuberg so if you local you could always have a try on a demo bike (good for adults too)

When I was looking into this for my little lad I ended up going the Electric route and I have to admit i am really impressed . The benefits other than them being quiet and the ability to ride them in parks is being able to slow them down with a simple turn of a screw . The downside is price! his first Bike a OSET 12.5 24v cost me 700 quid but they do hold there value we sold it 2 years later for 500 and he now has a kuberg cross 36v . I will say that you may think that these bikes are slower than there petrol counterparts but get that out of your head! on full power his kuberg fly's along as fast as and 50cc bike and accelerates much much faster .

electric you can ride around in the garden. Like they said, they're more pricey but hold their value. Then get a couple of hundred quid petrol one too if they're keen.

get yourself a full size OSET too then you can ride around together! I have the adult one, but my little girl's still too small to ride anything at 9 months old..... :D

Thanks Guys, really appreciate the responses so far.

I think for the pure ease factor electric seem the way forward for the first one. They can learn control in the garden and let loose a bit in the park, no dangerous stuff either. I know I know, motors are dangerous etc but why take the risk? they have plenty of time for messing about with hot motors and petrol.

Oset would be my first choice but the price is a bit high. This is the type I've seen
Kids Rocket DB500 Electric Battery Motorbike 36v 500w Electric Dirt Bike Lithium | eBay

Anyone have any experience with these?

Sorry, ive no experience with them. PM me if you are interested in a Kuberg though. The motor is not a brushless one and the carry capacity is just for kids really but its cheap enough.

My daughter had an oset 12.5 for her first bike when she was 4. Brilliant bit of kit that she progressed with quickly, the only bad things were the throttle was like an on/off switch and the brakes were more like adult sized levers. Yes it was expensive, we bought new as the used cost was about ÂŁ100 less so not worth it. We sold it for ÂŁ80 less than we paid for it, so ÂŁ80 for 2 years use is well worth it. We have a Mecatecno T12 now, (was ÂŁ450 less than oset equivalent) build quality is better despite not being that well known, throttle loads better. She rides it on local tracks in the park etc, no one is bothered about it at a all. No hot exhaust, no petrol, no hassle.

Ok so I guess I need to do my homework now, Oset, Kuberg, Mecatecno or cheaper Rocket DB500?

I have 2 Son's 4 and 7 the elder one isn't really showing much interests in 2 wheels. But the little one has been sitting on my KTM and making all the right noises for a while now plus he's a demon on his bicycle and has no fear.
The problem is he's short in the leg so that limits the choice and yet I don't want to get something he will grow out of in a years time. Thanks Dukenuken for the offer but I'm "Daan saarf mate" so not an option however if I do decided on Kuberg, ill give you a shout, any second hand bikes by the way?

Ill check out my more local dealers first and get the kid sat on one to gauge what's going to be better for him.

sounds like the same situation with my lad. The configurable power maps on the Kuberg Trial E brought him on loads. The basic setting feeds the power on like a clutch its nuts. now he is on full power.

there is a cheap Kuberg Trial E on ebay for ÂŁ599. you can buy a seat pad for it for like ÂŁ60. I can prob get one a bit less.
