13/52 if you want an usable second gear in real tight stuff. I have 13/51 on my 250 Berg. 52 would be better where I ride as I have to use 1st a lot. 13/50 would be tallest I would go, otherwise your creating a gap between 2nd and 3rd, where it will pull 2nd but bog down in 3rd. 14/50 , is what I would use if I was doing lots of road miles at high mph.

I literally couldn't use 2nd today at wern ddu on the slower more tech climbs. Where I could on my old 16 husky. Maybe it needs bedding in and loosening up more. Also maybe it's a little rich.

Winding pv to flush with case (yellow spring) could help?

Flapping now I've got tong Sunday on a week old bike I've ridden once and I'm not happy with the setup

When you are looking for alternate gearing lets think about maximum torgue vs. top speed.

For me everything longer that 13:50 creates to much useless speed.

I'm after winter ride with 13:52 and it is probably very good gearing for real technical stuff and has enough top speed.

Thinking about going back to 12:50 but I will see in the summer.

13/52 is about as low you will ever need really IMO, but I haven't seen your riding area.

You only need 1st in the very worst case. It's nice gearing a bike so 2nd is "the new" 1st and your only up from there. No having to cross neutral during changes.

I almost never use first, but sometimes its necessary and with 12/50 its useless. I've tried it too. Of course I can only judge using it on the 300. Tried almost everything, but 13/50 is best for me (or 14/52). For less technical stuff 14/52 is ideal as it doesnt create the nasty gap between 2nd and 3rd (like 14/50 does)...

I've used 13/52 for the last couple of years in SEEC and find that just about right on my 250xc. Races are mostly woods and fairly tight. For fast stuff like the Hafren I put on a 14 front or a 50 rear. Tried 14/50 one year but didn't like it but carb wasn't quite right at the time.

Was it Gomez' bike pictured with a 12 tooth front late last year? Must have been the roof or the one after getzen.

If you need that ultra low gear for trials type turns in rocks etc then if the pros use low gearing it can't be wrong- just make sure you have the talent to cope:D

Alfredo has 12:48 = 13:52.

They probably change it every race so why would they worry?

Must be other advantages to I reckon. Perhaps better mud/stone clearance around the front sprocket?

On my 2017 250 EXC 2t I found the standard gearing it came with (13:50), too tall for the tight technical riding we do.

I found I was in first gear nearly all the time.

Changed it to 12:50 and it seems better, allowing second gear to be used much more.

It all depends on the type of riding you're doing I guess.
