Just rang up for a price on a service (Robinsons are back open) and was asked if I wanted the Valve Clearances checking................do I ?? £125 for service, £175 with clearances checking just incase anyone is interested.
My bike is an 07 Duke II with 5000 miles on the clock. It has been serviced regularly etc etc, are there any tell tale signs that I need to get the valve clearances checked (it may have been done at another service, not sure)
for 50 quid I'd get them done; thats cheap as chips; it would take you probably a couple of hours or so to do them yourself if you havn't done them before
you can tell if they are out as your bike will be harder to start and will be down on power
Ah but will the mechanic do it on a stone cold engine or just after you have arrived onsite and is dropping the hot used oil out?
Complete waste of money if the valve clearances are set on a warm/hot engine - the clearances will be all wrong.
Some quality workshops keep the bike overnight and do the job the following day. The clearances should be checked every 3000 miles on those bikes - why are you getting the bike serviced at 5000 miles?
It's last service was roughly 12 months ago at about 3500 miles, so I thought I'd just get it done anually as I don't do a great amount of miles, but want to make sure I keep on top of it. Better safe than sorry !
Can't be sure if they have been done in the past, but I will be asking about it being done when the bike is cold. Thanks for that tip, I hadn't even give it a thought to be honest.
