OBD Scanner

My Gen 1 1290 SDGT has thrown a "Preload Adjuster Failure" code again.

I got it reset at the dealers and it worked 2 or 3 times before doing it again. I've convinced myself that it's because the threads on the shock are gummed up / corroded, so I've bought myself the "European" version of the ODBPROG Moto 100 scan / reset tool. On paper it covers pretty much all the KTM range - My bike is definately in the model list.

I've yet to try it on the bike, but thought I'd post a few details here as I go through the process

Model - OBDDIAG Moto 100
Cost £400 - (from Ebay seller EUTool18)
Coverage - KTM Ducati BMW Yamaha Honda Suzuki etc

It arrived in about 5 days, Looks to be well made, no carry case - but a decent box & foam packing. Theres the unit, charger / power supply and a decent library of brand specific connectors with it.

Got it out & switched on. It's basically an android tablet, touch screen, rechargeable battery powered.

First job it to get it connected to WiFi (simple enough) and then set up registration / log in with the manufacturer (China - looks fairly professional, but I would not be re-using my "bank" password here !).

Next up, an operating system update (1 button, "accept" and a small / quick file download - 3 mins total, easy)

Then a look around the menus. Mild panic, no lists of bike makers / models as shown in the manual / blurb. 5 mins to work out that that's another update process, so found the menu, clicked "All" (as in all models possible) and set it off. This is a much bigger job - 850mb / 32 files and took about 3 hours (my wifi is very fast - I suspect their server not so). I flapped it bit because there's not much to show its working, but one of those times when patience is the best option.

So, at this stage that's where I am. Unit charged, Software Loaded, Hundreds of bike models showing in the menus (including my '17 1290 SDGT and '22 690SMCR) and I'm ready to try it on the 1290 in anger. Watch this space.

Upto what year does it cover and what are the update charges after a year? Can a Suzuki be added as an option? I know you mentioned Suzuki but it does not seem to support it on the company blurb.

Ooops - thought I'd seen Suzuki in there, but no not on mine.

Update after years one is $80 USD - Its will still do the stuff it has already loaded, the update fee is for new / additional models

Attempt No1

Got home yesterday and set to with the new scanner.

1290 GT 2017, showing "Preload Adjuster Failure" on the Dash.

Bike on stand, Ignition on, engine not running
Lead "KTM 6" from the scanner set connected to OBD port under Riders Seat. (It's white, 6 pin and has a blanking cap on it - mine was tucked down by the fuse box)
Swith tool on, "DP" menu, Select KTM, auto scan for 4 digit model ref.
Bingo ! It recognized the bike correctly and linked itself to it
I went for "Auto scan - All" (As in All ECU's - there's quite a few, key ones being Engine, Body control and Suspension Control)
Sure enough "preload failure" found
"Clear All"
And it's gone !

Next up, I connected the bike to an external DC Power supply - set the voltage to 13.2V (making sure there was max oomph in the electrics for stepper motor in the rear shock to unstick itself)
I was stuck in "2 people no luggage mode"
Tried "1 person with Luggage" - worked straight away, so i re did this about 10 times back & forth
Next up "2 people with luggage" - worked again so cycled back & forth again
Finally, "1 person no luggage". It tried for about 10 seconds, then the error re appeared - Bugger !
I re set the code again with the scan tool - worked as OK above
This time I only got 2 of the 4 modes, then another error

Thought I'd try riding the bike a bit to see if warmth and a bit of excersise would help (the bike, not me)
Went out, Still only getting 2 of the 4 modes when I tried again on returning.
Ran out of time.

Things learned
  • The scan tool is very good, a bit intimidating to begin with, but it sees all sorts of info in the bike and seems to be able to clear any fault and display live data from any system.
  • The KTM model coverage seems to be very comprehensive - up to at least 2024 M/Y
  • The suspension problem is unlikley to be the ECU or wiring
  • I'm still convinced the Preload adjuster is sticking and the errors come when the stepper motor gets stalled.
