I didn't even try, but I have the original speedo as proof if I ever sell the beast. Will it be a problem for you at MOT time? MOT's for bikes don't yet exist over here, so no such problems...
It wouldn't be too hard to drive the new speedo on the table-top using a signal generator to simulate the input trigger. With the frequency set at the maximum speed accepted by the speedo (150mph??) you could clock up any mileage you want in an acceptable period. 5000 miles in 33 hours for example.

Originally was looking at a superduke but ended up getting a CB1000R and have happily owned that since then.
I always wanted a KTM though so I have now added to the stable a 2012...
