I recently had two to do and realised that, for my seats at least, I needed a stapler with a 'nose' to reach down into the tight recesses. I have several heavy duty manual staplers but non of them were suitable as they couldn't put the staples where they should be.
I did however find that upholsterers like beer.

 

You can warm the seat base with an air gun and try a HD stapler but an air stapler is super easy to do it with. The snag here is you need a compressor and a stapler. If you have neither the upholstery method might be better?

 

I have a compressor but wouldn't use an air stapler often enough to make it worth buying a new one. I might have a shufti on FleaBay and see if there are any 2nd handers about.

What size staples do you use?

 

I ended up with an air stapler - makes it a doddle and it wasn';t that expensive.I got a Tackwise one but I just saw a clarke one for 30 quid new - 8mm staples work OK for me

 

I use an Arrow manual stapler and 8mm staples.

Done the job on my own before, but it would be easier with another pair of hands.

Patience is everything...I put the new cover on over the old one.

I’ve tried it several times over the years with various results and lots of agrevation.

So I went and found a small local upholster who fits them for me for £10 and they look as good as factory fitted, with no aggravation 😉👍

 

That’s exactly what I would do because guaranteed I would fuck it up & end up buying a 2nd cover 😂

 

I hate fitting the bloody things as always end up making some sort of mistake.

I use an Air Stapler and you need to be careful with how much pressure you use. First time, I put it on full whack and the staple just cleanly cut straight through the cover and left a hole.

 

If you already have a compressor then an air stapler is a no brainer, they aren’t expensive and fire them straight in. I’ve pissed about too many times previously with industrial strength hand staplers and still end up having to double up then using a hammer to flatten a good (bad) percentage of them.

 

On 20-onwards models there is a lip/step, you'll need a gun with a "nose" that could reach over this lip/step. (as @Mikstan wrote above)

I got a cheap one from Aldi. Glue the cover on first, the stapler isn't a patch on the air ones, but if the plastic is warm and you hold it firm works a treat. For I think 5 quid, its kinda a one job use, never used it for anything else. I have a high quality cable stapler but it wont accept flat top staples.
