I recommend the ones Brompton sells. They are self adjusting and have a ratchet to keep them set while the oil pressure is low. This means the cam timing can't slip and there is no annoying rattle at startup.

Why not ask the seller? Surely it comes with instructions?

I can help you mate......... stick it on ebay and buy one of mine.

I have seen an engine that had a manual tensioner fitted... the guy forget to adjust it after every ride and it foooked the top end when it jumped a tooth...it had to have a £400 ish rebuild.

Mine are fit and forget and supplied with full simple to understand fitting instructions.

hi guys thanks for the comments but the question still not answered,ok i made a mistake i bought the wrong one but it still got to be fitted and has to better than the ktm original one,it did not come with fitting instructions,so has any one fitted one before thanks

 

I have one as well still sitting in the garage, bought a brompton one although i believe the factory run manual ones and plug the oil journal to the cam tensioner and gain a couple BHP had planned to do some work on it over the winter n a dyno but never go to it.

 

Might sound like a dumb question to everyone but why do you need to fit a diffrent to standard cam chain tensioner? and do i need to fit one? i have a 250exc-f 2007

 

It all depends if you have the annoying rattle on the cold engine. I used standard for the first 180 hrs then got pissed off with the noise; prefer to listen to a smooth engine so any noise out of place is easier to detect.

bromptons unit as explained above is a auto adjusting tensioner so your cam chain is always tension and at no risk of skipping and ballsing up your engine

 

So what we are saying is that the standard tensioner requires adjustment but the unit from bromptons does not it adjusts auto.
If thats the case then it makes sense to change to the auto one !!!

 

Call D3 in Kendal, they sell them, Keith will tell you how to set the tension and keep on top of it.

 

I believe you have to take a measurement to calculate the slack on the cam chain, If you get it wrong it can knacker the cams.

If I was you I would flog it again or put it down to experience and buy an automatic one from me.

Thats not a blatent request to buy mine, Its just my opinion on what I would do.

I don't like the idea of fooooking about trying to get the cam chain correctly tensioned when there is another tensioner that will do the job for you, Like I said thats just my opinion.

Sorry I cant help you with any advice how to correctly set yours up, I am sure if you percivere you will get it sorted.

Mine are fit and forget, no adjustment required in either installation or maintenance.

Glad you got sorted, just make sure you keep it adjusted correctly as the engine that blew up had that tensioner adjusted every 2 to 3 hours by it's previous owner. The guy that bought it and blew it up left it a little longer than he was meant to.

 

6weeks down the line.... "help my engine has just exploded"

 

thats not a very nice thing to say kev you would,t wish that on any one,this is what i was told,get the engine at TDC take off the rocker top,take out the ktm tensioner and replace with the manual one adjust up the tensioner untill you get 2 to 3 mm slack chain at the top between the cam gears lock up the tensioner and job done,sorry to say but it sounding and running good will let you know when it goes wrong,

 

I'm sure it will be OK. Keep your ear out for chain slap so you know its time to adjust it again.

 

Glad your sorted with it. It's a lot of pissing around every couple of hours compared to the dirt tricks one, they are fit and forget. Like I said though, glad your sorted.
