The only thing that ktm do better is the counterbalance motor. It does has less vibes than anything out there in 2t form. Trouble is that total lack of vibes means less feedback and for me that isn’t a positive as I don’t trail ride long distances. On my Beta you know when it’s about to lose traction due to some vibes, it’s not bad vibes. You can just feel it. It speaks to you. It comes with a more tractable motor, lots of quality kit, top suspension, wheels, tyres and brakes. It’s also cheaper than the KTM equivalent (which would be a six days with 6500 inserts fitted from new). KTM doesn’t win world enduro championships, Beta do, you can see why. I know I’ll be buying again next and it won’t be orange. Sherco is something I’ve not tried yet but by all accounts it’s a cheesy beta in blue.

KTM has over 20 full-franchise 'vacant dealer territories' in GB, according to the trade press. You need a 200 sq m dedicated KTM-only showroom, and are promised the opportunity to shift 150 new bikes a year. You've got to stock everything...road, dirt, clothing, parts, accessories etc, so it's the branded lifestyle package, for sure!

And pay for everything up front- that’s one serious expensive start up business.

Yeah....KTM UK got burned when Bracken went pop on them a few years back...since then it's been money up front for everything.

All bike manufacturers are businesses and there to make money, BMW / KTM / Ducati have all adopted the same model to appeal to the cunts sorry clients they want, mainly those with more money than brain cells, or a willingness to sign up for huge PCP packages on £20,000 road bikes.

There is also a world of difference between road and off-road I think, and that is where KTM have the issue, the offroad guys predominantly don't fit in with that model.

You could put a good case for them splitting the businesses, although maybe they are doing it in a way if everyone floods to smaller Beta / Sherco dealers for off-road.

I only got a Husky as I took it PX on a road bike I was flogging, buying for cash I would probably look towards Yamaha for reliability, spares backup etc.

Maybe with dosh for a new bike Beta would look good, but I would be concerned about reliability and parts supply / dealer support. KTM have been doing it a long time, people know the issues and how to work around / fix em, parts supply is good and there is a lot of 3rd party support as well.

We have just lost our local Husky/Honda dealer at Cheriton (Winchester) I think Mike had had enough....and Holeshott in Salisbury, who I believe were big off roaders initially, have been told to stock road bikes as well so now does KTM 1290 Superdukes etc. One of the staff there said KTM has lost 3-4 dealers? so they were being told to stock road bikes even though they specialised in off road stuff. I saw a lot of people sitting at desks ....

I've heard that treated him badly when he decided to close. Not good when you look at how much good he did for husqvarna over the years.

What's happening with KTM happened at least a decade ago with car dealerships... small dealerships are getting squeezed out and all the manufacturers only want their corporate image. The dealers have to buy the "showroom" (ie desks, seats, tiles, lights, carpet etc etc) from particular suppliers at inflated prices. They are also getting squeezed by the costs of running the dealership...

Sooner or later the manufacturers seem to forget what got them established in the market in the first place...decent dealers.

See Windy Corner (Triumph) ...Triumph doesn't even have a dealer in Leicestershire now AFAIK. And Hugenden M40 (also Triumph).

The tradition was that to work for KTM in Austria, you had to be a motorcyclist.

I once had an interesting conversation with a technical rep for a German gasket manufacturer. He said that he'd had to pitch for KTM business. They said that he had to 'understand the product'. He ended up being sat on a 250cc mx bike and going out to do a lap of the test track. He'd only ever ridden a little moped before.
He said to me "Yeah, that was one sales visit I'll never forget!"

I was in M&P last week and overheard one of the sales reps saying they were going to be getting the Ktm enduros models, and would be the only Ktm dealer in Wales.

I didn't think Mounters would ever shut, I was going to correct the guy in M&P and mention mounters and ET James are also Ktm dealers. Obviously unaware that mounters has closed! Maybe ET James will or are due to follow?

Erm... Colwyn Bay ? Recall they just spruced up their KTM showroom last year ish. If I get a 22 it'll be from there. Good deal last time and always a good service.

It would be a very very sad day if ET James gave up/lost being a KTM dealer I have bought a few bikes off Selwyn, they are a first class business to deal with 👍👍👍

I thought they had stopped being ktm? They had a bunch of gassers to sell but I’m not sure if that’ll continue? Thankfully though they’ve now gone Sherco so still there.

It’s mad, the valleys have been awash with orange and in recent years a fair bit of white. With Mounter and ET James gone from KTM the future is pretty much red and blue.

Only good thing about M and P is their cafe. Everything else is trash just like their staff who are clueless and need to look at computer to help you with anything.

E T James is definitely ending with KTM , but not until 2022 I believe. They are selling Sherco now, and gassers. They been KTM since 1994 and have always sold shit loads of bikes, but the big boys at KTM wanted them to have a big fancy new showroom and also stock the KTM Road bikes too ( mid Wales is enduro country). I can't wait to go to NEC bike show and give the KTM boys "some customer feedback"............
