After 15 years of always having a ktm in the garage its no longer a reality, I committed to the gen 1 gen 2 and gen 3 sdr bikes, all purchased new, ktm rc8r ( i miss that) among countless MX bikes for the lad as he grew up.

My garage has always had a collective mix of bikes but there's always been a ktm in there.

I sold my 890r a few months back and have since had an empty garage, not one bike, gone are the days of a rammed garage full of toys :( , after 4 months of the garage being empty my missis has added so much shit in there i cant even see my bike posters

To top it off where having major works on the house done, the rendering guys have dumped all there shit in there before they start in 3 weeks . I decided 4 nights ago after drinking 5 cans of piss water I need a bike, eBay is my friend.

6am start and 150 miles between me and London :(, vans empty of tools and I'm on my 6th can of pisswater already so will feel rough as fook tomorrow .

Hear it is, i haven't had an inline 4 for over 8 years in the garage, I just fancied a change, I probably wont use it much and when I get home tomorrow and load it in the garage it cant come out for 8 weeks as there's a massive skip being delivered Monday blocking the drive and garage doors.

Any of you guys had a go on one? I wont get to try it until the building works completed in 8 weeks.

I owned an early RR for a year (after my K1300R), and later rented a XR for a week in France - loved both of them, although the XR tune was disappointing in those first year bikes.
Love the engine.
But I should have kept the K1300R, lol, that was civilised nuts. I reckon that your 1000R will be similar...

Cheers bigkuri , I'm sure it will be a totally different experience to what I've had before, the dash looks cool at least ;)

Before anyone says its soulless clinical and boring its not relevant to me, I achieved 400 miles last year over 3 bikes. Its no biggie. It will just be nice to have an ornament in the garage again and I think for the odd ride out and for something to look at I'm sure ill be happy (y)

Its got some nice toys to boot.

I had one for 3 weeks (from new) before it blew up......... they gave me another, that one blew up after 3,500 miles,............. i got another new one, rode it 10 miles down the road, took it back to the dealer as the gearbox was making a noise.... Billy big balls salesman takes it out, not believing what i'd told him, gearbox locks up, he comes off and gets run over by a bus, luckily only breaking 1 leg. Tries to sue me!

Apart from that, they're great.

4 cylinder bikes are fun and I’ve owned a few over the years plus I still own one but most times these days When I go for a fang I pick the duke 690 over the 1000.
As for bmw I’ve never owned one so I can’t comment on your purchases but I think like this:-
When I was young I would have given my let nut for a bike like this...lol
So be happy as you can always get something else if it’s not living up to what you want.
I’ve owned 27 bikes since 1971.

I had a S1000R Sport, loved it but got sick of the relatively poor tank range…. although that might be the result of my weak self restraint.

Surprisingly good wind protection from that tiny screen but turning circle is poor for such a physically small bike.

I also found myself looking for extra gears as the bike seemed to rev high, even in 6th.

Excellent bikes, I had an early version, up only quickshifter. Very quick, very capapable. Handled very nicely, better once sag was set-up.
my only complaint was a little bit vibes and I ended up riding everywhere at a million rpm, constantly stirring the gearbox. Good fun though and a comfy, practical superbike. Toured Spanish Pyrenees on mine.
Just bought 1290R in preference, simply because I prefer twins.

I would add, the only bike I have ever maxed out, on the N 260 in Spain. Obviously the road is sometimes ‘closed’ for events.

Cheers guys, I made good progress this morning, set off at 6.15am got there for around 9.30am. I hate loading bikes in the van. Bought it private and the guy was genuine and nice. 2300 miles still with a bit of warranty . I think it looks stunning. That dash o_O

After me and the lad got the bike out the van at home I had to move a load of shit and spend an hour loading me tools and racking back in the van. All safe and sound at home. Only got 8 weeks to go before i get to have a go on it.

Just on me 6th can in the garage admiring my new toy :) Happy new bike days guys.

It's a great bike but my hot take is if looking used, then the S1000XR just makes more sense, especially if you're down to one bike.

I test rode this directly against my Gen 1 XR which was fairly taut compared to the Gen 2 XR and found that not only the XR turned faster side to side due to the big fuck off leverage on the handle bars and marginal weight difference, it also was a much more exciting engine/state of tune (mind you this was one of the first S1kRs when they came out) I also just think the S1000R's chassis is much more work whereas the XR you haven't even finished forming the thought in your mind it's already locked in to the perfect line.

I appreciate the S1000R is probably better on the side of the tyre at 120 mph but i doubt I need to say why that's irrelevant given where we live.

It's probably still one of, if not the best and most well rounded liter naked bikes though, and those BMW electronics and dash are to die for. Nice one (y)

Xr v Sr really depends on use.
i have toured on the S1r No problem.
Test rode the xr, a gen 2 and just did not like the linear flat low to mid power delivery.
Turning side to side, handling..buy the S1r. Why? You can set up sag. Makes the world of difference and you make turn in just the way you want with a little plus or minus pre-load back or front. Handles an absolute dream, the was sportbike should.
Not bothered about fine tuning the suspension and want a bigger bike with luggage, xr.

To be honest guys I think I'm over bikes, this one will see me fine for a few years. Out the van, in the garage and covered up. Its gonna be at least 8 weeks before I get chance to have a ride on the thing. 5 years ago I would have pulled it out the van legged it up stairs and got kitted up for a test.

There's something about 600 miles a week in the van for work that makes you think I really cant be arsed riding around for the sake of it at the weekend.

There's also something that doesn't sit well not having a bike in the garage. I'm not ready to throw the towel in. Fuck me I've even been absent in the Grumpy cunts thread  I must be mellowing with age (y)

I'm in the same boat. I travel most weeks - Flying around NZ and 2-4 nights away from home. Come the weekend I don't want to go anywhere. But NOT having a bike is not going to happen. Even if I just go into garage and take it to bits/fiddle with the bike.

A riding buddy has not long sold his , just changing bikes for either a 1390 sdr or going back to a Tuono. I rode it several times and it was lovely thing to ride. Excellent handling , never lacking in power and the dash were standout features for me.

Sadly I never got on with the riding position and found it too cramped in the leg . That's a me problem rather than the bikes problem tho

Fuck me, 1st ride today, slightly unprepared and not feeling to good, some nasty cold I cant shake off, and its not been warm.
Well! My concerns and lack of memory concerning inline 4 bikes were misguided and plainly wrong for my personal opinion.
After several years of stomach churning grunt and literally hanging on to the 1290r motor at wide open throttle,

this is a new experience.
Sublime , its like going from an agricultural farming animal to a ballistic cloud of speed, what a pleasure.

I don't ride enough to get bored but I get it, its a new bike and I may have different thoughts about it next year but all good for now. Fucking love it!!!!

Fingers crossed for decent weather tomorrow and i will get kitted up and take it for a proper ride. Happy bank holiday guys. (y)
