Last year I had big problems with the fuel pump on my 2018 SDR, detailed pretty exhaustively in this thread - In the end it was all due to me having fitted a Lithium battery after the original one gave up the fight. I went round in circles trying to find the cause of the "Fuel Pump Failure" messages and engine cutting out before finally fitting a conventional battery and seeing the back of the problem.
This year I started getting the same message flash up on the dash, only the bike continued fine and the message would clear itself. Wisely (ha!) I decided to ignore it as it never amounted to anything. On Saturday just gone I led a few friends on a ride up country from Hampshire to my old playground in the midlands (not saying where), and from the start I was getting the same message with irritating frequency, but no effect on the bike.. until between Daventry and Banbury I pulled over so we could let the last rider in the group catch up, and the bike wasn't idling cleanly, almost like the choke was still on slightly. 8 miles further on it's now running a lot worse, and continues to deteriorate, eventually feeling like a restricted 125. The rider following could smell a really rich mixture, and it was dangerous, needing a fair bit of throttle in 2nd to hold 30mph - had it suddenly cleared it would have been flip city , so I called it and sent the rest of them on their way while I got recovered home in a van.
After last year's story, and buying a Quantum fuel pump to try and fix the issue I still had the original pump so on Sunday I repeated the procedure and swapped the Quantum for the original, put it all back together and.... nada, same scenario; fires up ok but rough as buggery, popping and banging... time for dealer diagnostics.
I rang Premier Bikes yesterday (Monday) and the earliest they could get the bike in the workshop was 12th August FFS - apparently so many dealers have closed, they're now the only KTM dealer between Portsmouth and Bristol. Fortunately they have a wee slot on the afternoon of 3rd July when I can get the diagnostic check, which will hopefully tell me more than "Fuel Pump Failure".
Watch this space... 🤞

It’s a work in progress 🙄 They know that something is definitely amiss and the tech is trying to identify it. I ended up leaving the bike with them and he’s working on it when he can. Not ideal but the alternative was to hang on for another month. I’ve told them I need it for a holiday in less than 3 weeks so they have a deadline. Fortunately if it isn’t resolved a mate has offered to lend me his Fazer 1000 for the holiday. Not as sharp and punchy as my SDR, but at least it will work…

Brief update: Nothing sensor-wise has shown up (issue identified as the rear cylinder not firing), so the Tech went through the mechanical possibilities - plugs, valves, compression - all ok. The injectors were removed and tested, ok, so after the usual suspects were clear he's now chasing ghosts and I'm wondering whether it's the MCU 3.0 after all this. It was offered up as a possibility last year when I was getting regular issues with the fuel pump cutting out. The fault message on the dash said Fuel Pump Failure, but the bike kept running so that wasn't it. I'll chat with the tech tomorrow and see if he can check the MCU 3.0 - they're annoyingly well-hidden so it's unlikely to be a quick job... Otherwise he's chasing ghosts through the harness, looking for dry joints or broken wires.
I collect my mate's Fazer on Saturday...

After reading on this forum of a 990 exhibiting exactly the same symptoms as my 1290 - rear cylinder not firing due to a malfunctioning throttle body I emailed the dealer’s service manager on 4th August to see if they thought it was a valid line of enquiry. After hearing nothing in response I followed it up with a phone call the next week, to be told “it was a well known problem on the 990s but has never happened on the 1290s”. By this time the bike had been in their workshop for over 5 weeks since the inconclusive diagnostic check, but as it wasn’t booked in as a proper job it was just being looked at now and then. I wasn’t convinced by the “never on the 1290s…” outlook and it was obvious that they didn’t have another hypothesis so I badgered them about me getting a set of 2nd hand throttles to try as I had nothing to lose. Following up my suggestion for the umpteenth time last Friday (a month after first mooting the idea) I finally got a message from the tech to go ahead and get a set. A deal was done on Saturday for £160 (new set £1106) and they arrived at the dealer on Tuesday. I received a call late Wednesday afternoon to say that the tech had fitted the used throttles and the bike was now working fine.
I shall have to negotiate how much I can knock off the bill for diagnosing the problem myself and driving them to the solution FFS. As I’d no idea when my 1290 would be fixed I’d bought a contingency bike two weeks ago just to be able to ride something. Anybody interested in a very tidy 675 Street Triple?
